In March 2017, Dr. Robert Thiele was denied sovereign immunity as a University physician in the malpractice suit filed by Mikiala Whitacre against him. Whitacre accuses Thiele of malpractice in the failed intubation of her mother, Joy Anne Thomas, that led to her death during an emergency cardiac procedure.
